Two members of the Faculty of Dentistry have recently been awarded CIHR Dissemination Grants.

Dr. Mary McNally has been awarded a $100,000 KT Supplement grant for her project Brushing up on Mouthcare: Facilitating uptake of a daily oral care program in Continuing Care.

Dr. McNally and her research team have recently completed an NSHRF-funded project in which they partnered with three long term care facilities and a day hospital to learn more about the challenges facing personal care providers in the provision of mouth care in long term care settings.

Out of this partnership they developed a hands-on education and resource kit, the Brushing up on Mouthcare Toolkit for personal care providers, which addresses many of the challenges identified by their research.

This new CIHR knowledge translation award will allow the team to disseminate these resources to make them available to as many personal care providers as possible. The resource kit will also be modified so that employers and educators of personal care providers can use them for training purposes.

Dr. Richard Price has been awarded a $25,000 CIHR Dissemination Events grant to fund a gathering of researchers and key opinion leaders to discuss the problem of poor longevity of dental resins (white fillings).

The event, titled Curing Lights and their Ability to Cure Dental Resins in the Mouth will involve researchers in dental materials, physics and chemistry from Canada, the US, the UK and Germany.

The objective of the meeting is to develop a strategy to translate the results of laboratory research into key points that the average dentist can use when treating patients, with the long-term goal of improving the longevity of resin fillings.
