120-Credit Hour BA with a Major in Spanish

To graduate with this degree, you need: A minimum of 36 credit hours, a maxiumum of 54 credit hours in Spanish. At least 18 of these credit hours MUST be at the 3000 level.

The Departmental Requirements that you HAVE to take are:

  • SPAN 2020X/Y.06 or SPAN 2021 and SPAN 2022 or SPAN 2035, or equivalent
  • SPAN 2090.03 (this does not constitute your literature requirement)

120-Credit Hour BA with a Double Major in Spanish

To graduate with this degree, you will need: A combination of 60 credit hours, with a minimum of 30 credit hours in Spanish.

To graduate with this degree, you will need: A minimum of 54 credit hours in Spanish.

  • Students seeking entrance to the Spanish Honours Programme require at least a GPA or 2.70 (B-) for an Honours or 3.70 (A-) for First Class Honours on classes in the Honours subject.
  • Potential Honours applicants are encouraged to consult the Department's Undergraduate Advisor during their second year of study.
  • Deadline for application should be 3 semesters before your graduation.

The Departmental Requirements that you HAVE to take are:

  • SPAN 2020X/Y.06 or SPAN 2021 and SPAN 2022 or SPAN 2035, or equivalent

120-Credit Hour BA with Combined Honours

To graduate with this, you will need: A combination of 66 credit hours.

  • If Spanish is your primary major, a minimum of 36 credit hours in Spanish and an Honour's thesis completed in the Spanish & Latin American Studies Department.
  • If Spanish is your secondary major, a minimum of 30 credit hours in Spanish.
  • Students seeking entrance to the Spanish Honours Programme require at least a GPA or 2.70 (B-) for an Honours or 3.70 (A-) for First Class Honours on classes in the Honours subject.

Minor in Spanish (18 credit hours)

This minor is designed to develop a student's proficiency in Spanish. On a student's transcript, this minor will attest to a particular ability in the Spanish lanaguage.

Minor in Hispanic Cultures (18 credit hours)

The purpose of this minor is to make students more familiar with the culture and civilization of Hispanic regions.

Minor in Latin American Studies (24 credit hours)

Latin America is an area of increased interest to Canada. Trade with an investment in the region have grown dramatically in the last decade - as have immigration from, and tourism to many countries of the region.  Canadians have become accustomed to Latin American culture - food, music, cinema and dance.

Here at Dalhousie we have several departments which offer courses on the region (History, Political Science, International Development Studies, Sociology and Social Anthropolology, and Spanish and Latin American Studies). This minors program uses the talents of five departments in FASS.

Requirements:

Since the idea of the Minor in Latin American Studies is to provide a broad, interdisciplinary approach, students are recommended to take courses in a variety of disciplines. They are required to take SPAN 2020.06 (Intermediate Spanish) or SPAN 2021(Language and Culture) and SPAN 2022 or SPAN 2035 and any six credit hours from the Spanish & Latin American Studies program.  The other half-credits (in half-course or full course format) can be chosen from the other offerings listed below of the remaining departments. At least three credit hours should be at the 3000-level.
