Stanfield 2022: Digital Democracy – Technology, Media Fragmentation, and the Crisis of Democracy
In 2022, our panelists examined the theme of "Technology, Media Fragmentation, and the Crisis of Democracy." In recent years, democracy has faced significant challenges worldwide, often driven by individuals and groups leveraging social media and other emerging digital technologies to incite discord and undermine trust in political leaders, institutions, and longstanding traditions. The panelists engaged in a comprehensive discussion on both the potential and the pitfalls of these new communication technologies. They explored the complexities of political discourse within the context of social media, particularly in an era dominated by major technology companies. The panelists reached a consensus that investigative journalism is essential to maintaining a robust democracy and emphasized the importance of civic education, advocating for its expanded role in the future.

The Stanfield Fellows for 2022 were Profs. Kiran Banerjee and Scott Pruysers. They helped plan the Stanfield Conversation event and organized a Master Class for Dalhousie graduate students.
