Academic Assistance for FASS Students
Advising for FASS Students
FASS students are welcome to visit Dr. Becca Babcock, Assistant Dean of Student Matters, for academic advice or help with university regulations and policies. Come and ask Dr. Babcock about academic dismissals and probation, waiver requests, grade changes, or what to do if your grades aren't what you'd hoped they would be.
In-Person or Online Meetings by Appointment:
Please email asstdeanfass@dal.ca to schedule an in-person or virtual appointment with Dr. Babcock.
Wednesday Drop-Ins:
Wednesdays from 12 p.m. (noon) to 4:00 p.m. in the Office of the Dean, room 3030 of the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building.
Please note - Wednesday, April 23rd is the last day for Dr. Babcock's regular office hours for this academic year, but she will be available by appointment through the summer.
Beagle at the Bissett
Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon) in the Bissett Student Success Centre (4th floor Student Union Building) with Luna the Therapy Dog.
Please note - Monday, April 21st is the last day for Beagle at the Bissett for this academic year.
Come and talk to Dr. Babcock or an academic advisor from the Bissett Centre, and get to know Luna the Beagle while you're there!
Luna is a St John Ambulance Therapy Dog. She provides comfort and companionship. No medical or psychiatric services are offered during these sessions. For mental health support, please visit the Mental Health Services at Dalhousie's Student Health and Wellness.
Allergy warning: a dog will be present.
Two FASS students among the four winners of the 2025 Board of Governors' awards

You are warmly invited to the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology's annual Honours Research Symposium, which will take place on Tuesday, April 8th between 9:55 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in room 1009 of the Rowe Building. Eleven students will present the results of the research they have been working on since September. All are welcome to attend any part of the program, or even the whole thing! Please contact the SOSA department if you would like to see the schedule of speakers.
Presentations are 15 minutes long with 10 minutes for questions. Since it's a busy day, we'll keep strictly to the timetable. If you arrive in the middle of a session, please wait until you hear applause before entering the room.

JMEUCE Student Essay Prize
(April 30th deadline)
Are you writing -- or did you submit last term -- a paper on some aspect of the European Union, either an individual member country or the EU as a whole? The Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence is offering its annual award of $200 for the best student essay on any aspect of the EU, so send along your submission by 30th April.
This award is open to Dalhousie students currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate programme. For details, go to www.dal.ca/jmeuce or contact jmeuce@dal.ca.

Clan Ramsey of Nova Scotia Prize
To provide an annual prize to the Dalhousie University student registered with the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences who has written the best paper dealing with (any aspect of) the influence of Scottish culture within Canada (first preference will be given to papers dealing with the influence of Scottish culture within Nova Scotia). This award was established by the Clan Ramsay in Nova Scotia in recognition of the contribution of George Ramsay, 19th earl of Dalhousie, founder of Dalhousie University.
Prize for this year (2025): $1000.00 Deadline: Monday, April 28, 2025
Students who wish to submit an essay as an entry to this competition are to send their essays, along with a brief note of nomination from their professor indicating which course this essay was written for and whether or not the professor approves the submission of this essay to the contest OR the professor can submit the essay and note of nomination/approval on the student's behalf.

The MacEachen Institute is holding an op-ed writing competition, open to all graduate and undergraduate students at Nova Scotia universities and colleges
Heading into the 2025 Federal Election, we want to hear from you:
What is the biggest problem facing students in Atlantic Canada, and what should the government do about it?
Eligibility: All undergraduate and graduate students registered at a Nova Scotia university or college are welcome to enter.
Word count: 750 words or less.
Prize: The author of the winning op-ed will receive a $250 cash prize.

An introduction to essential entrepreneurship skills for those starting their journey in innovation. The program will run from October 9 to November 20, 2025, on Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Killam Library, with an early application deadline of April 7, 2025.
Collide Validate
Test and evaluate your idea's viability with real customer insights and expert guidance. The program will take place from October 22 to November 26, 2025, on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. through virtual sessions, with an application deadline of April 30, 2025.
