The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to draw your attention to several public events throughout the month of November including:
The 2024 Stanfield Conversation
Wednesday, November 20
7:00 p.m.
Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Dalhousie Arts Centre and via livestream
This year’s Conversation takes place two weeks after the US presidential vote will focus on the topic, “The US Election and Democracy’s Global Fate”.We will welcome the following guests to Dalhousie to discuss this topic:
Dr. Debra Thompson, Canada Research Chair in Racial Inequality in Democratic Societies and Associate Professor of Political Science at McGill University
Doug Saunders, Globe and Mail international affairs columnist
The moderator for the 2024 Stanfield Conversation will be Piya Chattopadhyay, thehost of CBC’s The Sunday Magazine.
This year’s event will take place in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Dalhousie Arts Centre. It will also be available via livestream.
This event is free and open to the public but guests must register to attend.
The 2024 Halifax International Security Forum: Public Panel
Thursday, November 21
Doors: 6:30 pm, Event start: 7:00 pm
McNally Theatre Auditorium, Saint Mary's University
This year’s public event, hosted by the Halifax International Security Forum (HFX) with support from Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University, takes place 2 weeks after the US presidential election and features international delegates discussing international affairs.
FASS students are welcome to visit Dr. Becca Babcock, Assistant Dean of Student Matters, for academic advice or help with university regulations and policies. Come and ask Dr. Babcock about academic dismissals and probation, waiver requests, grade changes, or what to do if your grades aren't what you'd hoped they would be.

Wednesday Drop-Ins:
Wednesdays from 12 p.m. (noon) to 4:00 p.m. in the Office of the Dean, room 3030 of the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building.
*IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER:
There will be NO office hours with Dr. Babcock on November 13th and 27th because Dr. Babcock and Luna the Beagle will be participating in the PAWSitive Support Therapy Dog Program!

The Daughters of Immigrants: A Multidisciplinary Study, co-edited by Dr. Asha Jeffers and Dr. Catherine Bryan Friday, November 8th,

Please join us for the launch for The Daughters of Immigrants: A Multidisciplinary Study, co-edited by Dr. Asha Jeffers and Dr. Catherine Bryan. This launch features a talk by contributor Yareli Castro Sevilla. Castro Sevilla is a PhD candidate in American Studies at Harvard University and a lecturer at the University of San Diego. Her dissertation titled “Imaginarios de Sinidad: Culture, Identity and Memory of Chinese Mexicans in Contemporary México” is the first comprehensive study of contemporary Chinese Mexican communities in México. Combining historical and anthropological methods, “Imaginarios de Sinidad” takes a migrant-centered approach to tell the stories of the multiple spaces inhabited and imagined by Chinese Mexicans. She will be sharing her work with us over a light lunch so please RSVP to asha.jeffers@dal.ca.

Each year Fountain School students collaboratively bring to life numerous stage productions, music ensemble concerts, and a free noon-hour live music series guided by faculty and inspired by guest artists.

From the Dalhousie French Society:
On Monday, November 4thand Monday, November 18th, we will be running our Café Francais. It’s a great opportunity to connect with other francophones and practice speaking French in a casual setting. Any level of French is welcome, we will provide coffee and pastries.
On Thursday, November 21st, we have a bilingual board game night! Play some of your favourite games and practice speaking French. Pizza is provided and all levels of French are welcome.

There was a time when Maeghan Tavener (BA’19) thought they might have to give up dance and theatre due to chronic illness. They found a way back to their passion and are making space for more disabled artists like them.

Professional Career Development Group
Graduating this year and feeling anxious about life after university or unprepared for an uncertain job market?
Attend this career development support group facilitated by a career counsellor to build a peer support network and confidence as you prepare to embark on the next chapter of your life!
The group is open to students from any program who will graduate in 2024 or 2025 and are available to meet in person at the McCain Arts & Social Sciences building on the Studley campus on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Session content will be repeated every 5 weeks and students who complete five different sessions of the group this year will be eligible to add as a professional development activity on their Co-Curricular Record!

Go to the next Friday on the events calendar to register, after which you will be contacted to confirm your eligibility and additional details.
