FASS Faculty and Staff Award Recipients

In April, Dean Jennifer Andrews presented four very deserving members of the FASS community with the annual FASS Faculty and Staff Awards! Congratulations to this year's award recipients:

Award for Service Excellence:

Dr. Colin Mitchell, Associate Professor and Graduate Coordinator, Department of History

This annual award honours a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in service and professional contributions to committee processes, departmental and Faculty leadership, and other administrative service.

Award for Excellence in Teaching:

Dr. Emily Varto, Associate Professor and Graduate Advisor, Department of Classics

This annual award honours a faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution to teaching, mentoring, and serving the students of the Faculty. The award is intended, above all, to underline the fundamental importance of effective and/or innovative pedagogy.

Staff Award for Excellence in Service:

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Staff Award for Excellence in Service was jointly awarded to administrative coordinators Michele Edgerton (of the Department of History) and Norma Ranieri (of the Multidisciplinary Centre).

This annual award recognizes a staff member who has made an exceptional contribution to supporting FASS faculty members and students.

Faculty members’ highlights:

Chevy Eugene, a lecturer in the Political Science department who teaches the introductory course in the Black and African Diaspora Studies program, delivered a poignant and visionary speech during the United Nations' 3rd Session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD) that took place in Geneva, Switzerland from April 16-19, 2024. Watch Chevy’s speech here.

Dr. Brian Noble, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology
Inter-Peoples actions for Earth Justice & Decolonization
Fulbright Canada-US Research Chair recipient Brian Noble of SOSA has been delving into alliances between Hawaiian and settler / activist colleagues at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.  Knowledge exchanges are opening potent collaborations for ecopolitical justice between peoples, and with the living earth.

Dr. Karen Foster, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology (SOSA), Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Rural Futures of Atlantic Canada, leads the newly funded Common Ground Canada Network, a national social sciences and humanities-led network of 52 researchers (17 from Dal) and 28 community partners focused on sustainable food systems. With $2M over 5 years, the network will create 54 research assistantships, three post-doctoral fellowships and important university-community relationships.  Read more in Dal News.
