Born and raised in Switzerland, Mirjam developed a knack for dialects and languages from an early age. While she loves learning and teaching languages, she studied mainly natural sciences and became a geographer (MSc, University of Basel) and marine biologist (BSc, University of British Columbia). Currently, she is a candidate in Dalhousie’s Interdisciplinary PhD Program investigating ways to improve Nunavut’s fisheries management by incorporating Inuit ways of knowing and of managing living resources. Mirjam is also a trained secondary school teacher (MA, Fachhochschule Aargau) with five years’ experience teaching math and sciences, though she started her teaching career teaching German as a Foreign Language. Since moving to Halifax she has had the great pleasure of teaching German language courses at both the German Heritage Language School and Dalhousie University.
