International Students

The School of Architecture welcomes applications from international students. To understand where to begin, please refer to the three points below.

What have you already studied?

  • Have you completed two years of university in non-architecture courses? If so, you can apply to BEDS (Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies), our two-year pre-professional architecture program.
  • Have you completed a four-year pre-professional architecture program (e.g., BA-Arch, BSc-Arch) that does not qualify you to practice in your home country without completing an additional graduate program? If so, you can apply as a Special Student Professional (SSP) to take senior undergraduate BEDS courses. This would qualify you for admission to our two-year MArch (Master of Architecture) program.
  • Have you completed a professional architecture program (e.g., BArch, BEng-Arch) that qualifies you to practice in your home country? If so, please do not submit an application, as it would be declined. If your aim is to become an architect in Canada, you can apply to the Canadian Architectural Certification Board to have your previous architectural education certified.

How much will it cost?

Dalhousie's Fee Calculator provides an estimate of costs. If you are applying to the BEDS program, you would enter these values for the first 12 months (fall, winter, and summer terms):

  • Citizenship: International student
  • Type of Study: Undergraduate
  • Program or Course of Study: Architecture
  • Course Load: Fall 6, Winter 5, Summer 5
  • Residence Housing: (off-campus or residence)
  • Meal Plan: (no or yes)

In the second year, there is only one academic term (plus a work term), so the fees are lower:

  • Course Load: Fall 1, Winter 5, Summer 0

Other tips

  • About 10% of Dalhousie architecture students are from countries outside Canada.
  • Dalhousie's International Centre supports international students and provides information for new students.
