Sexton Library

The Sexton Design and Technology Library is located on the third floor of McNab Building. It's one of five Dalhousie University Libraries, along with the Killam, Kellogg, Sir James Dunn, and MacRae Libraries.

The Sexton Library's collection includes print and electronic books, print and electronic journals, reference material, digital collections, and theses in architecture, planning, and related disciplines. A formal introduction to the library is given to new BEDS students in September. After obtaining your student ID card, take it to the library to have your card registered with the Library. You can also fill in the online registration form. Registering your card will give you borrowing privileges at all Dalhousie libraries, as well as the libraries at the other universities and community colleges in Nova Scotia. When you register your card, you are also encouraged to permit your name to be released to another architecture student who is looking for a book you have signed out. This is a collegial way to share resources.

The librarians at the reference desk can provide research assistance. The Architecture and Planning specialist is Katie McCaskill: email katie.mccaskill@dal.ca.

The Sexton Library provides links to image sources: freely available online collections, collections created by Dalhousie University, and paid-subscription image databases.

Google Scholar and JSTOR

The Google Scholar search engine provides easy content searching of a wide range of academic publications, but requires a strategic use of keywords and phrases to find what you are looking for. For articles on architecture and related topics, one of the most useful online resources indexed by Google Scholar is JSTOR.

Dalhousie Architecture Thesis Documents

MArch thesis documents (1998–2024) are catalogued in Novanet and available in the Sexton Library's thesis collection or online in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Online Theses. Like many other master's theses and doctoral dissertations, they are indexed at Library and Archives Canada. More information on print and digital theses and dissertations is available on the Architecture Subject Guide thesis tab.
