On Monday, May 30, we had the pleasure of
welcoming a large group of new graduates to our DalArchPlan alumni family. Students from five programs in our two Schools walked across the stage at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium.

By the numbers

At this year’s spring Convocation, we welcomed 52 graduates with Bachelor of Environmental Design degrees. Nine of these students earned distinctions (a grade point average of between a 3.7 and 3.84) and three graduated with Sexton distinction (an average of 3.85 or more).

32 students graduated with a Master of Architecture degree, exactly half female and half male.  All of these students represented many provinces in Canada. One of our graduates, Philippa Ovonji Odida, is from Uganda. She was featured in a special Dal News convocation story, Building Diversity.

We had 29 students graduate with a Bachelor of Community20160530_110246 Design, 22 with Honours in either Urban Design and Planning or Environmental Planning and Sustainability, or both.  These graduates are from Canada, the United States, Egypt, the Bahamas, and China.

18 students graduated with a Master of Planning. They are from Canada, China and Iran.  One student graduated with a Master of Planning Studies.

A family affair

Families traveled to support their students from all over Nova Scotia and other provinces across Canada, but also from the United States and China.

One of our graduates had his two young children in attendance and another became a new father just 3 weeks before graduation day!

Faculty celebrations

Back at the Faculty, graduates received their awards and showed their supporters around the Schools at the annual Convocation Tea.

Alumni supporters in attendance included Louis Lawen (BEng’94) and Benjie Nycum (MArchFP’97), both of whom support student scholarships.

Our newest honorary degree recipient, world-renowned architect and urban design expert Jan Gehl, attended the ceremony and the convocation teas.

Our Faculty had the honour of hosting Prof Gehl while he was at Dalhouise. Prof Gehl participated in all our graduation events and contributed his vast knowledge and experience in
various other ways as well, including a walk along Spring Garden Road with members of the Planning and Design Centre and others working on SGR improvements; a workshop for colleagues in professional practice; and a standing room only public lecture on May 31st in the Medjuck Building. The Faculty partnered with HRM, WDCL, and the Halifax Business District Commissionto support these events. Thank you especially to SoP’s Dr. Eric Rapaport for helping to coordinate Prof Gehl’s itinerary, and to TJ Maguire (WDCL and SoP alumnus) for also helping to host Prof Gehl and taking time to show him around the South Shore.

One other note-worthy point about Prof Gehl’s visit: PLANiFax developed a promotional video for his public lecture and recorded his visit. If you have not seen the video, you can view it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2Zr5Q0Xi4
