Men’s Basketball
The Rams men’s basketball squad took a major step forward in their 2016-17 campaign.
The team recorded five wins in their second season under coach Andrew Barnhill after failing to nail down a victory the previous season. Those wins saw Dalhousie Agricultural Campus finish the schedule with a 5-15 record for a three-way tie for fifth place in the eight-team conference, based on the ACAA tie-breaker, the Rams secured the 5th spot and a trip to the ACAA Championships. In the quarter final game of the ACAA’s, the Rams met the 4th place Holland Hurricanes. The Rams played well, but lost to the eventual ACAA Champions and CCAA Bronze Medalists – Holland College Hurricanes 96-63.
Forward Robin Grouse topped the conference with 255 rebounds (14.2 per game) and 24 blocks to be named to the ACAA All-Conference team.
Grouse also led the team with 15.9 points per game for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the campus’ recent athletic awards banquet.
Badminton
It was an excellent season for the Rams badminton program in 2016-17.
The Rams claimed four third-place finishes at the conference championship at Kings University while coach Richard Bennicke was named the conference coach of the year.
The Rams claimed third-place honours in Men’s Singles, Women’s Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles at the conference championship.
Danielle Albers was one of the KS Marchant Award winners at the campus’ recent athletic awards banquet with a 4.30 GPA. She was also named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Academic All-Canadian.
Caiti McCavour took home the team’s MVP honour.
Cross Country
It was another great season for the Rams cross-country running program.
The women’s team brought home a conference title from the ACAA championships thanks to their athletes occupying four of the top seven finishing spots at Brookvale Ski Park in Crapaud, P.E.I.. Dalhousie was 17 points clear of the runner-up Mount Allison Mounties.
Danielle Albers (team MVP) and Lily Forsythe led the charge at the event with third and fourth-place finishes respectively. Both were also named to the ACAA All-Conference team.
Their title-winning performance helped coach Joy Galloway-Jones to the conference coach of the year award.
The Rams women also won two of the three regular season meets while finishing second in the season opener. Two of the men’s team competed as individuals in the conference championship with John Yool their top finisher in 13th spot.
Women’s Rugby
The Rams women’s rugby squad didn’t have the season it had hoped.
The Rams were beaten 57-0 by the St. Thomas Tommies in the conference semifinal to bring their season to an end after a 3-5 regular-season record saw them finish third among five teams.
Scrum half Katie McQueen and standoff Melissa Sherritt were named to the ACAA All-Conference team. McQueen also picked up team MVP honours for the second consecutive season.
Men’s Soccer
It was another tough season for the Rams men’s soccer team.
Dalhousie AC finished the season with a 2-9-1 record to slot it sixth in the seven-team table.
Gabe Vos and Kristian Wolters shared the team scoring lead with two apiece. Wolters was also selected to the ACAA All-Conference Team.
Central midfielder Chris Morash was the campus’ male athlete of the year, made the All-Conference squad and was named the team’s MVP.
The Rams could see a huge improvement next season as 11 players are eligible to return.
Women’s Soccer
The Rams women’s soccer squad had a solid season in 2016.
The team improved to 5-7 – after recording three victories the previous campaign – to finish fifth in the conference among seven teams. The Rams missed a berth in the conference championship by one point.
Sian Rankin continued her torrid scoring pace in her second season, providing 15 of the team’s 23 goals to tie for the lead in the ACAA. She also was among the top selections in the conference to earn herself a spot as a CCAA All-Canadian . The Edmonton, AB. striker was also named to the ACAA All-Conference team and was the team’s MVP.
Keeper Ellen Sharp allowed just seven goals, third best in the ACAA.
Truro’s Brett McCavour was also named to the All-Conference lineup and was an Academic All-Canadian.
With their success, coach Jackie Ryan picked up the conference coach of the year award. The team has improved its results each year since her appointment in 2012.
Women’s Volleyball
The Rams had a tough time on the court in 2016-17 in women’s volleyball.
The Rams finished at the bottom of the eight-team conference standings with a 3-18 record, a pair of wins behind the Kings Blue Devils and Sainte-Anne Dragons.
However, there were bright spots for Dalhousie AC.
Thea McLachlin continued to show she is one of the top players in the conference, finishing second in kills with 208, kills per set with 2.08 and points at 283. Her four points-per-set average topped the ACAA and her 268 digs were third.
The Red Deer, AB., native was also named Dalhousie AC’s female athlete of the year and team MVP.
Coach Guy Desgagne has 10 players eligible to return in 2017-18 as his lineup featured six rookies.
Woodsmen
The Dalhousie Woodsmen brought yet another CILA Championship home to Bible Hill.
The men laid claim to their fifth Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association (CILA) crown in the past six seasons, clinching the championship on home turf at the 32nd annual Rick Russell Woodsmen Competition at MacMillan Show Centre.
The Woodsmen finished 145.45 points ahead of the UNB Varsity Reds after splitting the season’s four events with their New Brunswick rivals.
The women missed out on successfully defending their championship, finishing the season in third spot behind McGill University’s Macdonald campus and UNB.
Captains Connor Morse and Jessie Swinamer picked up team MVP honours at Dalhousie AC’s recent athletic awards banquet.
Equestrian
The Rams equestrian team could hold its head high based on their results in 2016-17.
The Rams were nipped by one point for the team championship by St. Francis Xavier University.
However, Katie McQueen claimed the novice fences banner while Emily Sutherland and Hannah Facey were tops in advanced and beginner walk, trot and canter. Danielle Mayrich also claimed top spot in walk and trot.
Dalhousie AC riders also claimed several individual class wins throughout the six-event season.
