Horticulture Nova Scotia is pleased to support student innovation and research excellence by sponsoring a student research competition. The goals of the competition are to encourage problem solving and the exploration of new ideas, foster a stronger connection to a student body interested in agriculture and to encourage the next generation of Nova Scotians to consider a career in the agricultural industry.
Program Guidelines:
- Eligible students include those enrolled in the 4th year project program at the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus
- Students can choose a topic of their interest, but it must benefit the Nova Scotia Horticultural industry (check out www.horticulturens.ca for more information on applicable commodities)
- Students are to submit final papers to Horticulture NS by December 15th 2016.
- The judging panel will be made up of representatives from the organization and they will choose up to 6 finalists who will present at 2017 Scotia Horticultural Congress. The winner will be announced at the congress.
- All finalists will receive a complimentary registration to the congress and the winner will receive a cash prize of $500.
The judging criteria will include:
a. Aspects of Innovation
b. Applicability to industry (practical application)
c. Potential economic impact
d. Ability to help sustainability
e. Scope – whether it has an impact on an individual or the industry as a whole
The decision to enter does not have to be made until the final submission deadline, but Horticulture NS is happy to support student research through mentorship, which can be facilitated any time during the research project.
