The People in Our Neighborhood: Lugene Young

Where are you from?
I am from Canada. I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia.I  grew up in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Moved to Truro in 1987, where our two daughters were raised. My husband and I have been empty nesters since 2013.

What do you do at Dal?
I am a Registered Nurse and I manage Health Services at DAL-AC. Health services provides confidential, non-emergency primary health care and wellness services to all students at DAL-AC.

Health Services acts as the student's family care practitioner by assisting to manage the health care needs of the students while away from home. The Health Services team consists of Carolyn Bartlett, RN,  Dr. Andria MacAulay, Dr.Hugh Maguire psychiatrist and numerous off campus psychologists.

Dr. Andria MacAulay is on campus on  Mondays 902.830.1230.You can book an appointment with the Doctor through the Nurses Health Services.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

I am looking forward to meeting the new students and catching up with the returning students. I am excited to be part of the new students and transfer students transition to DAL-AC. I look forward to supporting all students in achieving optimum health and academic success.

What is one piece of advice you would give students from your area of expertise on campus?

One piece of advice is very difficult for me, here goes … Achieve university-life balance, which encompasses so much… University  is one of the most exciting times in your life, however  it can also be one of the most challenging and scary times too.

For many students, university is the first real taste of independence and with that independence comes many decisions and choices  about how to spend your time. Your goal might be to seek a balance that allows you to excel in school while still experiencing all that university life has to offer. If you have difficulty with balance in your life come see us in Health Services, we are here to help you.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In  my spare time I like to make sure that I stay busy in different ways. I enjoy jogging, gardening, hiking, reading and traveling, I enjoy sailing with my husband on our 27’ sailboat “Forever Young”. I volunteer in my community by sitting on the Colchester Sexual Assault Board and Bridges Board. At the end of a busy day I like to relax with a cup of tea.
