The People in Our Neighborhood
To help celebrate Welcome Week 2016, The Faculty of Agriculture is profiling some of the people you will meet across the campus community in your travels on your new path at the Faculty of Agriculture.
The People in Our Neighborhood: Brooke Abram
Where are you from? Vancouver, B.C.
What do you do at Dal? I am going into first year studying Equine Studies (business management, diploma in technology). I've been an equestrian for 10 years and I am the only one in my family to be horse obsessed and in the past couple years of travelling and meeting new people from basically every continent, I've found that it helped me decide what I want to do, and to do something I love. If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life! Horses and the equine industry have always interested me and has been something I've been passionate about since I began riding at 11 years old. I feel as though there are always ways to improve and develop the industry, the business within, the environmental aspects of it all, and the all-around practice of the sport and athletes (Equine and Human).
Why Dal? This particular program at Dal stood out to me because of the super specific and well-rounded program outline. All the components of what I think would be an important part of this degree were included, as well as some things I didn't even think of that would help me along my academic journey and career path following. I'm so excited to start this part of my life after having to defer it for almost three years, and I couldn't think of a better place to do it than Dal. Following this program, I hope to continue my education at Dalhousie and gain a degree in Sustainable Resources and the Environment Management, in hopes to achieve or at least work towards more environmentally friendly solutions in both the equestrian industry and the mining, forestry, and oil industries among other things. Preserving our Canadian Beauty and the environmentally friendly ways is something I've found I am also very passionate about. I have a lot of travelling to second and third world countries to thank for that!
What are you looking forward to the most this year? Modelling has given me many gifts, among them is learning to live with different people from different countries in close quarters; so any anxiety the average first year student might have about moving to a new place far from home with strangers does not happen to me. Been there done that! I can't wait to meet some of the other people in my program, or just in the equestrian club. I also can't wait to meet all of my Prof's and people that work at the school and help the students make this all possible. I have a feeling we will become quite familiar. I love Nova Scotia and can't wait to see the campus and learn about any history Truro and the school might have. And last but not least, meeting the people I'm about to share my Res with, I'm used to being surrounded by a very diverse group of people!
What do you hope to do with your education once you graduate? With the Equine Studies degree, my original ambition was to become a manager of a show ground such as the accomplished Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, B.C, the renowned Spruce Meadows in Alberta, or on a smaller scale, the manager at a show barn and breeding/training facility. With the degree that I'd acquire with the Sustainable Resources and the Environment Management program, I've developed ambitions to work within the mining, oil and forestry industries in order to preserve and sustain our unique Canadian ecosystems and environments while still providing citizens with what we need to live and function as a first world country and leader in environmentally friendly technology and innovations. This being said, I would love to combine both degrees into a recycling based bedding and arena footing company, in order to cut down, or completely cut out, the use of wood in the stable yard. Among other directions I'd like to take in, new ideas and possibilities keep rolling in!
