300 Felines Update

Posted by Stephanie Rogers on August 5, 2016 in News

The 300 Felines campaign began in the Fall of 2015 as the Faculty of Agriculture’s first crowdfunding campaign. Since then, it has raised over $13,700 to assist the feral cat population in Cumberland and Colchester Counties.

Thanks to 136 generous donors, the 300 Felines first clinic was held July 14. 10 cats were spayed or neutered and all received vaccines, deworming, flea treatment, a feline leukemia test, and pain control. Each patient received an ear notch for identification purposes. If they are trapped again, the ear notch will indicate to our caregivers that the cat has already been spayed or neutered and treated by the clinic.

The success of this clinic is credited to our on-campus team and also to volunteers from the community. Dr. Donna Spracklin and Sherry Miller from Fundy Veterinarians provided care and support during the clinic, and Elsie Robinson DeBay and Karen Butt assisted with trapping cats. Students/graduates of the Veterinary Technician program included Jasmine Johnson, Danielle Smith, Lindsay Russell, Taylor Jacobs, Alycia Frank, and Emily Grant.

Our dedicated group of faculty, staff, and students on campus have spent over a year preparing for this campaign and organizing this clinic. Dr. Lori Parsons is the Veterinary Technology Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor at the Faculty, and has worked tirelessly on launching this program, advising student leads, and organizing and participating in the clinic. Veterinary Technician students have been instrumental to the success of this campaign, and team leads Lindsay Russell and Taylor Jacobs are commended for their commitment to the feral cats of the region.

300 Felines will be participating in CatFest August 6th at the Museum of Natural History, where they will have an interactive Kid Zone and bring awareness to the public about feral cats and the 300 Felines program.
