By Michelle Thompson
The Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture will be welcoming more than 500 Grade 8 students to campus on June 7-9th for the Amazing AgZone Race!
AgZone is an annual event co-hosted by the Faculty of Agriculture and the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture for the past eight years with the goal of promoting the science of agriculture and highlighting educational pathways.
“AgZone is a great opportunity for us to welcome young people to our campus to show them the range of the work we do,” explains Katherine Rutherford, Community Education Officer. “Hopefully they will gain a better appreciation of agriculture and maybe even see it as an education or career opportunity.”
The theme is based on the Amazing Race and students will visit seven interactive stations over the course of each day including Aquaculture, Ruminant Animal Centre, Plant Science, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Business & Social Services and the Department of Agriculture.
This year, AgZone guides will consist of 4-H summer assistants and volunteers within the Department of Agriculture. Students from Central Colchester, George P Vanier, Thorburn Consolidated, Truro Junior, E B Chandler and Spring Hill Junior High schools will be participating.
