Posted by Stephanie Rogers on May 2, 2016 in News

4-H Canada will be hosting 62 4-H youth delegates from across the country at the 2016 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress, May 3-8 at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa.  Faculty of Agriculture student Kylynne Sheffield of Stanley, NS will be one such student.

The 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress aims to deepen the understanding of governance and public policy, nurture communication skills and expand the horizons of youth as they discover Canada through the nation’s capital. Workshops will culminate with the annual debate, where delegates will construct insightful arguments and practice their skills of persuasion and public speaking. Ultimately students will learn more about Canada, its government and themselves.

A member of the Cobequid 4-H club for 12 years, Kylynne is one of five delegates selected from the province to attend the Conference in Ottawa.

“I'm hoping to learn a lot about our government and be able to pass that along to the young people in my community,” explained Kylynne.  “I feel more and more young people are losing interest in politics or don't have a lot of knowledge about things that affect them politically and I'd like to change that. I also want to make connections with other 4-H members across Canada and build relationships.”

4-H Canada’s 44th Citizenship Congress will seek to explore the social, environmental, health and economic impact that rural communities had on Canadian history and its contemporary challenges they face in the expansion of urban centres. Under this year’s theme, “Canada: Redefining Rural” delegates will consider the changes, challenges and opportunities taking place in Canada’s rural communities.  Participants will be asked to identify the leadership role they can play in advancing rural issues and keeping rural communities vibrant and relevant.

Graduating in May with a Diploma in Business Management- Equine Specialty, Kylynne intends to pursue her own business Sheffield House and Farm Sitting.  You can find out more about her business by visiting http://ky536048.wix.com/houseandfarmsitting
