Faculty of Agriculture student participates in the iGEM‑2015 Giant Jamboree in Boston.

From September 24th to 28th, over 2700 participants, including 280 multidisciplinary iGEM teams of colleges and universities from all over the world, gathered at a Giant Jamboree in Boston, US to present their projects, meet the other members of the iGEM community and celebrate their hard work.

iGEM, the International Genetically Engineered Machine Foundation, is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to education and competition, the advancement of synthetic biology and the development of an open community and collaboration.

Dr. John Rohde of the Faculty of Medicine served as the advisor and Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe was the Faculty of Agriculture collaborator of the 2015 iGEM team. Eric Pace (third from left) is a fourth year student in the Faculty of Agriculture B.Sc (Agr) major in Animal Science.

Eric had the opportunity to join with Dalhousie iGEM-2015 team and contribute to the project on “Building blue E. coli: Engineering the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway”.

Eric has won an NSERC USRA scholarship and has been investigating anti-cancer properties of berry anthocyanins in Dr. Rupasinghe’s laboratory.
