Change to password procedures for faculty/staff

Posted by Stephanie Rogers on January 5, 2015 in News

Beginning this year, faculty and staff will be prompted to update their NetID passwords every 6 months.  Students and alumni (unless they are employees) will not be affected by this change.

The password age limit is being implemented for several reasons:

·        Changing passwords more often reduces the window of opportunity for an attacker to phish or spam your account.

·        Password age limits are effective in reducing risk, for both you and the university. Network attacks can and do happen, with a high probability that compromised passwords are used for spamming and phishing.

·        Some employees have access to sensitive and/or critical data (e.g. SIN#s, grades, medical records, personal banking information), while most employees have access to network resources and services (e.g. Banner, email, BbLearn, wireless, Novell and desktop login).

In a phased approach, beginning February 3, 2015, faculty and staff who have a NetID password older than 6 months will be required to change their password.  If you work with sensitive and/or critical data, changing your password more often is encouraged.

You’ll be advised by email beginning 4 weeks prior to your password expiry date.  For security reasons, the messages won’t contain links, but will direct you to login to myDal to view “My Announcements” for further instructions.

You don’t need to wait for the reminder notices to change your password, you can do that now.  See Announcements in myDal.

If you have a question about password expiration please contact the Service Desk by emailing support@dal.ca or call them directly at 902-494-3834.
