Looking for Advice?

It's Convocation week on the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus and as we prepare to celebrate and send off the Class of 2014 we paused to reflect and solicit some sage advice from our faculty and senior management team.

Congratulations to one and all!

David Gray
Dean Faculty of Agriculture
Principal, Dalhousie Agricultural Campus

You must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, "Most people lead lives of quiet desperation." Don't be resigned to that. Break out!

Claude Caldwell
Associate Dean Academic

I shall defer to some sage advice my wife Lynn, offered to our son as he embarks on a new part of his life. Choose joy. Do not choose happiness, or contentment or just pleasure. Choose joy.

Keltie Jones
Assistant Dean Students

Wherever you end up, get engaged with your community.

Gail Power
Faculty Administrator

Take the time to figure out who you really are and who you want to be.  Once you know this, or as you are doing this, think about what you want to do with your life, in all respects: personal, work, play, service.  Knowing who you are as a person and how you want to live will help you to make the right decisions as you go through life.  This may be a process but it is time well spent and it will set the foundation for building your future.

Set goals.  In my experience, people who set goals are more likely to achieve them and advance farther more quickly.  Goals help you to focus.

Live within your means is also good advice.  Doing this will pay off in ways that you won’t necessarily see day-to-day but I assure you, someday in the future you will have more choices for having lived this way and that day will come before you know it.  Congratulations and best wishes to you all.

Sam Asiedu
Chair Plant & Animal Science

Thank you to all of the graduates who decided to come to Dalhousie University.  I hope the experience has enriched your lives as much as you have enriched ours.

I wish all of you the very best of luck in your future endeavors.

May you take the valuable information you have learned here and make a difference in our world – you, our graduates, are our future.

It is my sincere hope that you are successful in the career path you select.

Raj Lada
Chair Environmental Sciences

My thoughts are - everything in your life will change, everything may look challenging but remain as who you are.

Kenny Corscadden
Chair Engineering

Congratulations to the Class of 2014 on the first of what will no doubt be many steps along your career path.

Whether you pursue an academic or industry related career I suggest that you take a holistic approach to your development.  In terms of industry positions, employers are placing more emphasis on transferable and practical skills , so take an objective and reflective look at your skill set and identify gaps or areas that your wish to improve.

When you start your first or next job, seek mentorship and I would suggest raising this even as early as the interview stage.  It is never too early to create a professional development plan, this may involve training, courses or experience gained in other departments or divisions of an organization, which will only broaden your understanding.  So my key message is be proactive, ask for assistance and show that you know where you are going. Wherever possible find jobs you enjoy.

Judy Smith
Athletic Director

Stay engaged in sport and recreation in your community.  It is a great way to stay connected and remaining fit and healthy is a key component to a successful life.
