In August 1975, the Department of Economics and Business expanded by 50 per cent when John Stackhouse joined the NSAC faculty.  Raised on a poultry farm in London, Ontario and armed with B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from University of Guelph, John has been a perfect fit for the former NSAC and Faculty of Agriculture.  His multi-faceted interests and talents have been instrumental in assisting the institution to grow and develop over parts of five decades.

Although Professor Stackhouse’s first love is teaching (for which he has been honoured with the Canadian Association in Agriculture Programs Teaching Award), he has also been active throughout his career with various administrative responsibilities, research and curriculum development.  He guided the department and NSAC through the early years of computerization – serving three years as first Director of Academic Computing.  John was the primary architect of the agricultural economics major when NSAC became degree granting in the early 1980s.  He is also co-developer of the recently approved double-degree in International Food Business (IFB), which graduated its first class in Truro in May and in Dronten, The Netherlands in July.  His key contributions to the IFB program were recognized in 2012 when CAH Vilentum University of Applied Sciences unveiled the “John Stackhouse Meeting Room” in its new state-of-the-art teaching and administrative building.

John remains an avid curler but has retired from the squash court – where he loved to warn younger opponents that old age and trickery would overcome youth and vigour every time!  John and his wife, Sheila (a retired school teacher), have raised two sons in Bible Hill – Ryan a PhD candidate in Florida and Jamie a Web Developer in Halifax.  One would think that after 38 years teaching John would be happy with such a long and successful career and fully retire.  Well that just wouldn’t be John Stackhouse … he has been invited and has agreed to continue his work in the International Food Business program as well as teach several courses this fall.
