Research Ethics Committee established at Faculty of Agriculture

Posted by Stephanie Rogers on October 19, 2012 in News, Research

The recent merger with Dalhousie University means that we are now under the jurisdiction of the Dalhousie University Research Ethics Board. Research involving human participants is required to be reviewed by the Research Ethics Board prior to the research being undertaken.

There are a few differences between the past NSAC REB and the Dalhousie REB in the submission and review process and Researchers are encouraged to visit the Dalhousie REB website for more information at http://researchservices.dal.ca/research_1482.html.

One difference is that course-based research is reviewed by a Unit-Level Research Ethics Committee (ULREC). The Faculty of Agriculture has recently established a Unit-Level Research Ethics Committee which is Chaired by the Faculty of Agriculture representative on the Dalhousie Research Ethics Board. Steven Dukeshire is the current Chair of the ULREC.

The ULREC reviews minimal risk, course-based research carried out by undergraduate and graduate students with the exception of honours and graduate theses. Fourth year projects are considered course-based research. The submission and review process for the ULREC has been designed to be as streamlined as possible in an effort to help expedite student research which tends to occur on a very tight timeline due to the nature of our programs.

Guidelines for writing an ethics submission, all forms and tips for writing a good submission are available on the Faculty of Agriculture website   It is important that both students and supervisors are familiar with the guidelines, requirements and procedures for submission.

If there are any questions about any aspects of the ethics review process or about a specific submission, please do not hesitate to contact Steven Dukeshire, ULREC Chair at steven.dukeshire@dal.ca or 893-6593.
