Fees & Expenses
Please see below for some guidance on fees and expenses. Note that a very limited amount of bursary funding may be available to assist with accommodation, local airport transfers and/or meals. Decisions regarding financial support will be made after applications have been received.
1. Travel and Visa Costs
International and out-of-town participants will be responsible for arranging their travel and covering all associated costs, including visa if necessary. However, DO NOT BOOK YOUR TRAVEL BEFORE YOU RECEIVE CONFIRMATION OF ACCEPTANCE! Participants should arrive on Saturday 1st or Sunday 2nd June and leave on Saturday 15th or Sunday 16th June. Please send us a copy of your tentative itinerary before it is finalised it, so we can just double-check it.
2. Course Fees
Applicants should consult the university website for information on fees to attend this summer course (POLI 3820). General details are available at: www.moneymatters.dal.ca and note the various fees which are applicable and the different amounts for Visiting Canadian Students and Visiting International Students. Specific questions should be e-mailed to student.accounts@dal.ca, quoting the course number POLI 3820. We recommend you contact them early in the application process, so there is time to get all the information relevant to your particular circumstances.
Exchange Students are generally EXEMPT from the Dalhousie application fee, tuition, international tuition fee and international tuition guarantee..
3. Other Expenses
Health Insurance
All students at Dalhousie are required to have comprehensive health insurance coverage. More information will be made available closer to the date. Make sure you check any health insurance carefully to ensure it provides all the necessary coverage.
Accommodation
We are currently holding a block of student rooms in a Dal residence available for participants to reserve at a nightly student rate of $45 (plus taxes). Check our Accommodation & Meals page for details. Please note that the number of rooms is limited so do not delay in making a reservation!
Meals and Incidentals
Students will be responsible for meals and incidental costs such as local bus fares, coffee etc. Go to the Accommodation & Meals page for details, as well as the Numbeo site for Halifax (although note that food prices have been going up markedly in the last year and may continue to do so). When calculating your budget, note too that 15% tax is added to most items, and that tips are expected in restaurants and taxis etc.!
Airport Transfers
Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is approximately a 22 mile drive from Dalhousie. Details of several options for getting to the university and the associated fares can be found on the Dal webpage of Helpful Tips. The airport website also has a useful section on accessible options. If you still need advice when you arrive, you can consult the Ground Transportation Desk in Arrivals, provided it is open when your flight gets in.
