Joseph E. Moore

Born in Holyrood, Joseph E. Moore, now of Harbour Main, Newfoundland was a pioneer in the broiler production industry of that Province. As the second producer to enter this industry, his first flock totalled only 2,000 birds. Over time, however, his production grew to 40,000 birds and the scope of his farm operation grew as well to include 10,000 layers and the growing of some 80,000 replacement pullets per year.

Seeing the potential for growth in other agricultural commodities as well, the farm business became involved in the livestock industry producing sheep and beef cattle and, following the sale of the egg operation, Joseph Moore went on to establish an 80 sow farrow-to-finish operation.

Concerned with the further development of the Province's agricultural industry, he became an active participant in numerous farm organizations including serving as first Chairman of the Newfoundland Egg Marketing Board, as first Chairman of the Newfoundland Broiler Chicken Marketing Board, as Chairman of the Provincial Poultry Federation, as Chairman of the Conception Bay Egg Producers' Association, as Chair- man of the Provincial Poultry Co-op, as Secretary and later Chairman of the Avalon Sheep Breeders Association, and as Chairman of the Avalon Hog Association.

Over the years Mr. Moore has given freely of his time, as well, in serving the interests of his community. He was a member of the Conception Bay Centre School Board for 16 years and was at one time Chairman. He was Executive Secretary of the Federation of Roman Catholic School Boards for Newfoundland and Labrador. He has served as Deputy Mayor of Harbour Main and as Chairman of the Harbour Main Improvement Committee.

Mr. Moore and his wife, Margaret, have four children.

Nominated by the Newfoundland Chicken Marketing Board, the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame takes pleasure in recognizing the contributions of Joseph E. Moore to his community and to the Newfoundland agricultural industry.
