Douglas Gordon Moore

Dr. Douglas Moore has made an outstanding contribution towards animal improvement in the Atlantic Region and Canada. Educated in Peterborough, Ontario, he is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College. He first joined the New Brunswick Veterinary Services Branch as a district veterinarian in 1945.

In 1949 he transferred to the Health of Animals Division of Agriculture Canada carrying out T.B. testing programs in Prince Edward Island. Later that year he rejoined the New Brunswick Veterinary Branch to develop an artificial insemination program for the province. He went on to become

Manager of the N. B. Artificial Breeders Co-operative, retiring from this position in 1982.

Under Dr. Moore's guidance the A.I. Co-operative expanded over the entire province. In the mid 50's he began developing a program to serve Prince Edward Island and later Newfoundland.

Working closely with breed associations he guided the development of sire selection committees and young sire proving programs.

Dr. Moore was one of the pioneers in the techniques of freezing bull semen and promoted the sale of Holstein semen and other breeds in mainland Europe, the British Isles and Central America.

He was instrumental in the establishment of Cattlemen's Field Day and Tri Pro livestock Company Limited. Dr. Moore's dedication to the livestock industry is evident in the improved production and type of dairy and beef cattle - in the region and the enhanced position of many livestock producers.

In 1982, Dr. Moore received the Award of Merit from the Canadian Association of Animal Breeders. Douglas G. Moore was nominated for induction into The Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame by the New Brunswick Central A.B. Co-op Ltd.
