Mawkwil~mn~j: Let’s Look for It Together

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on April 7, 2025 in Research Funding

We are pleased to announce the launch of the next competition for Mawkwil~mn~j - Let’s Look for It Together, an Indigenous community research partnership seed fund. The goal of this seed fund is to provide financial support for Indigenous research and to foster relationships between Indigenous communities and the research community at Dalhousie University.

Applications for this seed fund can be submitted by Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations throughout the Atlantic Region or across other regions of Canada, or by Dalhousie researchers who are able to demonstrate intention to address research priorities as identified by an Indigenous Nation, organization or community.

This seed fund encourages meaningful engagement, co-learning and sharing, and is meant to honour cultural protocols and respectful processes for partnership development. This fund offers a unique opportunity for Indigenous communities and organizations to leverage the research talent, expertise and resources at Dalhousie University, and enables communities and researchers to become better acquainted with potentially aligned interests and research priorities. The seed fund permits partnership development activities and connections to occur in preparation of subsequent grant cycles.

Up to $30,000 is available for the current competition. Each applicant may request up to $3,000. Projects may use the funds over a period of two (2) years. It is anticipated that up to ten (10) applications will be selected for funding.

Priority will be given to new projects and/or collaborations not previously supported by Mawkwil~mn~j.

Indigenous Nations, communities or organizations interested in partnering with Dalhousie researchers may submit the completed application form to IndigenousResearch@dal.ca.

Dalhousie researchers looking to create new or enhance existing relationships with the Indigenous Nations, communities or organizations may apply for the fund by submitting the following via ROMEO:

  1. Completed application form [PDF]
  2. Confirmation of community interest

The deadline to submit applications is May 30.

Dalhousie researchers must submit their applications via ROMEO for receipt at ORS by May 30. Please consider the time required for Department and Faculty approvals when submitting applications to ensure the submission is received by ORS by the deadline date. Note: The 10-business day internal ORS submission deadline does not apply to the Mawkwil~mn~j Indigenous community partnership research seed fund as it is an internal funding opportunity.
