The global blue economy is an important part of the world’s economy, providing jobs and resources to billions of people around the world. However, it currently faces a number of challenges, from overfishing and pollution, to climate change and ocean acidification. In order to ensure a sustainable future for the blue economy, there is need to develop strategies and policies that promote the conservation and responsible use of marine resources, while also providing economic benefits. There is, in other words a perceived need to make the blue economy more sustainable. It is against this background that the Handbook of Sustainable Blue Economy is being proposed. It will provide an invaluable resource for policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders, offering guidance on how to create a more sustainable and prosperous blue economy.

Abstracts are being sought for the Handbook of Sustainable Blue Economy.

Similar to the African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation (open access) and the Handbook of Climate Change Management, one of the largest non-publicly funded publications on climate change ever produced.

The Handbook of Sustainable Blue Economy will be a Major Review Work, published by Springer Nature, one of the world's top publishers, associated with the Climate Change Management Series, the leading peer-reviewed book series on matters related to climate change.

The nature of these high level publications means that they have been over the years officially counting for promotion and tenure purposes. In excess of 3.000 scientists have so far been contributing to the books.

Led by the International Climate Change Information and Research Programe (ICCIRP), the Handbook of Sustainable Blue Economy will be a state-of-the-art publication, covering topics such as:

1. The Role of Technology in a Sustainable Blue Economy
2. Harnessing the Power of the Ocean for Sustainable Development
3. Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Protection for a Sustainable Blue Economy
4. The Role of Marine Resources in Achieving a Sustainable Blue Economy
5. Blue Economy and Innovative Fisheries Management
6. Smart Governance for a Sustainable Blue Economy
7. The Contribution of Marine Tourism to the Blue Economy
8. The Development of Sustainable Ocean-based Industries
9. Marine Pollution and its Impact on the Blue Economy
10. Marine Renewable Energy and its Role in Sustainable Blue Economy

The book will also discuss items such as the role of women and youth in a sustainable blue economy, how to create a supportive policy and regulatory environment, and how to ensure the equitable sharing of benefits generated by the blue economy. Thanks to its scope, the book will also provide an important contribution to ensure the long-term sustainability of the blue economy and its associated industries. It will also support the implementation of various SDGs such as SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG13 (Climate Action), SDG14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 17 (Partnerships to achieve the Goals).

Expressions of interest to contribute to the Handbook of Sustainable Blue Economy, initially consisting of a 200 words abstract with the title of the paper and the full details of the authors, should be sent to the ICCIRP team at: info@iccip.net. The deadline for abstracts is June 30, 2023. Full papers are due by October 30, 2023.
