The United States Department of Defense is offering several funding opportunities that are open to Canadian researchers. In addition to the calls below, DoD funding pre-announcements can be found here.

Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Program

  • Clinical Research Award for research that evaluates orthoses and/or prostheses using patient-centric outcomes relevant to Service Members, Veterans, and other individuals with limb loss and/or limb impairment. Valued at up to $250,000 USD for two years (level 1) or up to $2M USD for four years (level 2). Pre-applications due July 15.
  • Clinical Trial Award for trials with the potential to have a significant impact on improving the health and wellbeing of individuals with limb loss and/or limb impairment. Valued at up to $350,000 USD for three years (level 1) or up to $4M USD for four years (level 2). Pre-applications due July 15.

Peer-reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program

  • Applied Research Award for advancing optimal treatment and restoration of function for individuals with musculoskeletal injuries. Valued at up to $725,000 USD for three years. Pre-proposals due May 27.
  • Clinical Trial Award for rapid implementation of clinical trials for treatment and management of military combat-related or non-battle orthopaedic injuries. Valued at up to $2.25M USD for four years (level 1) or $2.75M USD for four years (level 2). Pre-proposals due May 27.
  • Clinical Translational Research Award for high-impact and/or new/emerging clinical research that may or may not be ready for a full-scale randomized controlled clinical trial. Valued at up to $1.5M USD for four years. Pre-proposals due May 27.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Research Program

  • Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award for initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially ground-breaking concepts in the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) research field. Valued at up to $150,000 USD for two years. Pre-applications due June 17.
  • Idea Development Award for ideas that have the potential to yield high-impact findings and new avenues of investigation. Valued at up to $500,000 USD for three years. Pre-applications due June 17.
  • Clinical Translational Research Award for studies that will move promising, well-founded preclinical and/or clinical research findings closer to clinical application, including, diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment of TSC. Valued at up to $750,000 USD for three years. Pre-applications due June 17.
