MEMORANDUM

From:     John Newhook, Vice-President Research (Acting)

Re:         Appointment of Associate Vice-President Research

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Janie Wilson as Associate Vice-President Research commencing July 1, 2018 for a three-year half-time position. Dr. Wilson is a full professor, with tenure, with a primary appointment in the School of Biomedical Engineering at Dalhousie University.

Dr. Wilson received a BSc in Engineering with Honours, Mathematics and Engineering from Queen's University and an MASc and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Dalhousie University. Her research explores the role of human movement biomechanics in the development, progression and treatment of osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions with orthopaedic surgery.

This research, and her faculty position, have required her to work in a very collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment within the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering and Health Professions, and within the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the IWK Health Center. She is a co-Director of the CFI-funded Dynamics of Human Motion Laboratory. Her research studies have crossed the spectrum of basic and applied science through fundamental, NSERC-funded research into improved biomechanical and statistical modeling through to very patient-oriented CIHR funded research investigations. She has also received research funding from the Atlantic Innovation Fund.

Dr. Wilson has been active in Faculty-level committees and governance in both the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Engineering. She is active in a leadership role in societies related to her field including the Canadian Society for Biomechanics, Canadian Orthopaedics Research Society, The Orthopaedic Research Society, and Bone and Joint Canada. She is a mentor for Women in Science and Engineering, and was a Board member for the University Children’s Centre.

Dr. Wilson will be on sabbatical leave prior to beginning her duties. Please join me in welcoming Janie Wilson to this position.

I also want to take this opportunity to announce that Dr. Mark Filiaggi has agreed to extend his current term as Associate Vice President Research until June 30, 2018. His willingness to take on this additional commitment is reflective of his dedication to the role of AVPR, and to the University research community. Over the past five years, Mark has taken on challenging portfolios related to Tri-Agency compliance, demonstrating his integrity, professionalism, and fairness and advancing our policy, practice and education in this area. He has been a leader in the VPR Office in developing, advocating for and implementing the Institutional Framework for Support of Research, and in spearheading the more formal creation of Research Cores. He led the initiative to establish a more formal and effective process for ensuring our researchers are being recognized for their significant accomplishments through awards and honours at a national level. He is currently our CIHR University delegate and the lead AVPR in advancing the Health and Wellness strategic area. I look forward to continuing to work with him over the coming months.

Please join me in thanking Mark Filiaggi for his continued dedication and service.
