Funding Programs


Potential sources of funding for partnerships with Dalhousie research teams

The three funding programs listed below/linked in the sidebar are commonly used and facilitated through OCIE to support industry collaboration and make partnership opportunities more accessible to qualified businesses. 

  1. Dal/NRC IRAP Science & Technology Assistance Program 
    Industry initiates the application for this funding          

    Up to  $5,000 value of work between a Dal faculty member and a small- or medium-size businesses headquartered in Canada. 

  2. Invest Nova Scotia Productivity and Innovation Voucher Program 
    Industry initiates the application for this funding

    There are two levels of voucher awards: Tier 1 vouchers cover projects valued at a maximum of $15,000 while Tier 2 vouchers cover projects valued at a maximum of $25,000. 

  3. Mitacs Accelerate Program (for students and post-doctoral fellows) 
    A faculty member or industry representative can initiate the application for this funding 

    Those awarded with Accelerate funding can receive up to $15,000 per 4-5 monthsperiods of a student working on a research project.

NSERC Alliance Grants 
Researchers iniatiate the application for this funding with an industry partner’s support

NSERC Alliance Grants support collaborations between university researchers and partners in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Projects can last anywhere between 1-5 years and focus on generating new knowledge and accelerating the application of research results to create benefits for Canadians. Grant amounts range from $20,000 - $1 million per year. Visit the NSERC website to learn more. 
 

ACOA Atlantic Innovation Fund
Primarily industry-initiated funding 

Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) offers support in the development of innovative products that lead to commercial success. University researchers are eligible to receive this funding, as are businesses, co-operatives, and research institutions. Visit ACOA’s website to learn more.

NRC-IRAP Funding for Companies
Industry-initiated funding

The National Research Council (NRC)’s Industrial Research Assistance Program provides funding to support research and development projects at various stages of the innovation cycle. Visit NRC’s website to learn more.

Innovacorp Early Stage Commercialization Fund 
Funding for faculty researchers 

This fund assists in moving research originating in Nova Scotian universities to market. Funding of up to $50,000 is provided to university faculty members and supports activities such as the assessment of commercial potential, technology transfer, and more. Visit the Innovacorp website to learn more.
