Before You Start

Prior to Your First Day

Prior to your first day, please read through this online toolkit to familiarize yourself with Dalhousie. At the bottom of each page is the suggested next page to read.

Banner Number

You will be assigned a Banner number (B#) during the hiring process. Please check with your manager if you have not received your Banner number yet. Your Banner number is your Dalhousie employee number and will be used for identification purposes.

NetID

Once your Banner number has been obtained, please activate your NetID. Your NetID is used for IT systems access. View this list of IT services, including how to activate your NetID. Please refer to your manager with any questions on the technology required for your position.

  • Once your NetID is activated, you can create your personalized Dalhousie email address using the Alias Management tool
  • You will also now have access to Web for Employees (view your pay, benefits, deductions).

DalCard

The university's official ID, the DalCard is used for access on campus. It also serves as a library card, provides access to certain campus buildings, and it is a debit card that is an accepted payment method for select goods and services on and off campus. Facilities Management employees also use the DalCard to gain access in and out of working areas.

Getting your DalCard:

  1. Visit dal.ca/dalcard
  2. Click on Get My DalCard
  3. Follow the instructions to upload your photo and your government issued ID.
  4. The system will send you an email to your @dal.ca account when the card is ready.

If you have had a DalCard before, you will need to email your updated photo to dalcard@dal.ca and you will not need to follow the steps under Get My DalCard.

If you require access on your card for doors on campus, please coordinate that with your administrator who will contact support@dal.ca. Note: Most exterior doors require a four-digit PIN. You can set that by logging into your DalCard account at dal.ca/dalcard, which will require your netID and password.

Your Pay

All employees (except Facilities Management employees and casuals paid biweekly) will be paid on the monthly payroll. Pay day is the 27th of the month, unless the 27th falls on a weekend, in which case pay day is the preceding workday. For a schedule of days, please visit Pay Information [login required]

New employees (except Facilities Management employees) must complete and submit required payroll documentation before or around their start date. Please complete the mandatory Direct Deposit Form [login required] and Federal and Provincial Income Tax Forms (TD1 Personal Tax Credits Return and TD1NS Nova Scotia Personal Tax Credits Return). Please scan the completed forms to payforms@dal.ca and quote your Banner number in the email.

Transportation

Dalhousie supports and offers a number of Sustainable Transportation initiatives including outdoor and indoor bike racks, showers, transit passes for employees and students, a Guaranteed Ride Home Program, on campus car share spots and workplace pricing, and a variety of flexible work arrangements depending on the employee’s position.

In relation to parking at Dalhousie, employees are able to obtain a general parking permit online through Dalhousie Security Services. A valid vehicle permit and DalCard are required. A 2-week complimentary/temporary parking permit is available for new hires who don’t yet have a Banner number. To request a temporary parking permit, please bring your letter of appointment to Security Services.

Annual, term, weekly or daily plans are available at various prices throughout the year. Reserved lots are available through a wait list. Parking permits are currently free of charge for the Agricultural Campus in Truro. However, a general parking permit must still be displayed. Visit Parking and Parking FAQs for more information.
